DigiTimes is projecting that within 2-3 years over 50% of smartphones will have NFC built-in, we're just hoping that the NFC ecosystem in the real world will be built up by then as well.

NFC has a ton of uses, and has already found a foothold in other markets, most notably in Japan, but is still struggling to gain wider acceptance. BlackBerry has built NFC into a number of devices, and is hoping to make it a standard for enterprise security passes. Google has been attempting to push its adoption by putting it in the last two flagship phones - the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus - as well as adding in NFC-sharing feature Beam into Android 4.0. NFC can be used in a number of things from security passes, to subway passes, sharing, or mobile payments. It could even be used in ways similar to QR codes.

The first push has been in building up the mobile payment option, because obviously moving money around is more important than moving information. Still, we're hoping that smartphone manufacturers can push well past 50% NFC adoption, but if NFC is built into SD cards more, that may not happen.
